Mitä talville tapahtuu - What is happening to the winters

Suomessa on ollut poikkeuksellisen lauha loppusyksy. Aiheesta on ihmetelty mitä talville tapahtuu ilmaston muutoksen myötä.

Alkupäivämäärä on pysynyt vuodesta toiseen keskimäärin samana.

Pirunkurun kalliot voinevat odottaa lumia tavalliseen aikaan tulevinakin vuosina.

Late autumn 2006 has been exceptionally warm in Finland. It has been frequently asked what is happening to the the winters along with the climate change. Is the beginning of the snow season happening later now than in earlier years.

Observations from snowlines give light to this question also. The beginning of the snow season by these observations starts when there is enough snow in the measurement poles for readings and there is enough snow to observe the animal tracks.

By these means the snow season starts on average on 22 October. There has been no change in that average date. In 2006 the observations started on 1 November.

In the highlands of Varrio the onset of winter has been rather constant during the past almost 40 years. This might be the case in the coming years as wells. - The cliffs of Devil's gorge can wait for the coming snows as usual.
