Värriön luontopäiväkirja - Varrio nature diary

Vuoden 2006 keräkurmitsakävely tehtiin viiden miehen voimin (Teuvo Hietajärvi, Jorma Laurila, Ville Vakkari, Matti Pohjonen ja Veli Pohjonen). Aikuisia keräkurmitsoja löytyi tänä vuonna 11 kappaletta (viime vuonna 15 kappaletta). Osalla keräkurmitsoja oli juuri kuoriutunut poikue mukanaan. Lisäksi löytyi yksi pesä, jossa oli kolme munaa.

Värriötunturin keräkurmitsakävelyllä viiden hengen linja (etäisyydet 30 metriä) kulkee rintamassa läpi Värriötuntureiden 11 km pitkän selänteen, menomatkalla länsilaitaa ja tulomatkalla itälaitaa. Linjalla havainnoidaan keräkurmitsat, kapustarinnat, pikkukuovit, kiirunat ja pulmuset.

Muita päivän reitin havaintoja:

• 3 laulavaa taviokuurnaa kurujen ja länsilaidan kuusikoissa,
• maakotka kiertelemässä kolmosen ja nelosen välisen maaston yllä.

Annual dotterel walk of Varrio Research Station was carried out by a team of 5 observers (Teuvo Hietajarvi, Jorma Laurila, Ville Vakkari, Matti Pohjonen and Veli Pohjonen). This year altogether 11 adult dotterels (Charadrius morinellus) were found (15 dotterels in 2005). Some of the dotterels had tiny chikcs with them. In addition we found one nest with three eggs.

In the dotterel walk the entire 11 kilometers long chain of 5 Varrio mountain tops is walked through in a line of 5 walkers, each at a distance of 30 meters. When walking southwards the western slope is checked, when walking back, northwards, the eastern slope is followed. While walking all dotterels, golden plovers (Pluvialis apricaria), whimbrels (Numenius phaeopus), rock ptarmigans (Lagopus mutus) and snow buntings (Plectrophenax nivalis) are counted.

Other obervations from the dotterel walk route:

• 3 Pine grosbeaks (Pinicola enucleator) singing in spruce forests between the fell tops and west of the fells
• Golden eagle (Aquila chrysaetos) in flight above Varrio III and Varrio IV
  

In the photo male dotterel is shown in Varrio fells, peak 5. In the front you can see two typical plants of fell flora: Three-leaved rush (Juncus trifidus) and Alpine clubmoss (Lycopodium alpinum).

In the video below the dotterel had two chicks nearby and the bird pretended wounded to attract attention.
