Värriön luontopäiväkirja - Varrio nature diary

Värriön pitkospuureitti sivuaa heti Ylinuortin rantaharjanteen takana pientä lampea ja suota, jossa asustaa sekä liro että taivaanvuohi. Toukokuun 24. päivänä alkoi sataa, ilma oli hyinen (3-5 astetta), ja linnut olivat hiljaisia. Sekä liro että taivaanvuohi huutelivat kuitenkin suolla varoitushuutojaan.

Muut tavanomaisuudesta poikkeavat havainot:

• peippo lauloi Puolivälinjängän takana (peippo on hyvin harvinainen Värriötuntureiden korkeammissa maastoissa; sen on lähes täysin korvannut järripeippo)
• pohjantikka rummutti Ylinuortin törmällä (todennäköinen; kuulohavainto, pohjantikan rummutussarja on hivenen harvempi ja lyhyempi kuin käpytikan sarja)

Just after passing the Ylinuortti river and crossing the small sandy ridge behind the river bankl, the track to Varrio Research Station passes a small pond and peatbog. Two waders (Charadrii) are regularly found there in spring and summer time: Wood sandpiper (Tring glareola) and Common snipe (Gallinago gallinago). Although the weather on 24th May turned cold (temperature 3-5 degrees; rain was approaching the Varrio area), these waders were shouting their alarm calls.

Other observations, not common to Varrio

• Chaffinch (Frincilla coelebs) was singing behing Puolivalinjanka aapa mire; this species is surprisingly rare in the higher altitudes of Varrio Nature Reserve, it has almost completety been substituted by Brambling (Frincilla montifrincilla).
• Three-toed woodpecker was drumming on the shore of Ylinuortti river; probable, voice observation only, the drumming series of three-toed woodpecker is a little bit slower and shorter as compared to the other obvious alternative, Great spotted woodpecker.
